Margaret E. Bittle was born on September 30,1846, in Union County IL. She was the daughter of John L and Hannah Kitts Bittle. She was the mother of six children. She died on August 31, 1890,in Union County IL. Interment was in the Bittle Cemetery. (Note: Several years after Margaret died, her husband Jacob Rhodes, married Laura MC Bittle, Margaret’s sister.)
Margaret married Jacob R. Rhoades,(later changed spelling to Rhodes)on July 6, 1865, in Jonesboro, IL. Jacob was born on January 22, 1842 (on legal documents) or 1841 (on tombstone). He was the son of Mathias and Matilda Damron Rhoades.He was born in Union County, IL near Beech Grove and Hutchins Creek.
Jacob and Margaret owned and farmed a farm of 220 acres in Jonesboro Township, and 300 acres in the Alto Pass Township. (He bought the John L Bittle, Emeline Wilson Bittle farm from the Bittle heirs of John L Bittle as per a deed signed by several Bittle sons and their spouses) after John’s death. That deed conveyed 40 acres of the 80 acre tract owned by John Bittle, later by Lewis M. Bittle and then Walter Doc Bittle/Cora Lingle Bittle.) The Bittle cemetery is located on this farm. Jacob served in the civil war, attaining the rank of private. He was a member of the Democrat Party. He died on March 11, 1907. Interment was in the Bittle Cemetery.
